Bridges

Dental bridges are used to replace missing teeth and are a restorative technique which achieve a natural and highly functional result.

Also known as a ‘fixed bridge’, dental bridges are long-lasting and hardwearing. Typically, an artificial tooth is fixed in place and is supported on each side by crowns. The gap created by the missing tooth is filled by the bridge.

Different types of bridges

Your dentist will recommend the most suitable bridge to resolve your dental problem. We have set out the different types of bridges used below:

• Regular bridge:This bridge is supported on both sides of the gap by the natural teeth which are shaped to support it. It is then cemented into place. Often made of porcelain-fused-to-metal or from ceramics, the bridge is colour-matched to the patient’s natural teeth
• Adhesive bridge: The bridge is adhered to the sides of the natural teeth on either side of the gap
• Resin-attached bridge: This type of bridge is most commonly used to replace a single front tooth. Little tooth modification is required prior to fitting as the bridge is attached to an adjacent tooth by an adhesive ‘wing’
• Implant-retained bridge: Where dental implants are used to achieve an attractive, natural result

The procedure

Your dental bridge will be fitted over two to three visits to Penwortham Dental.  During the first appointment, the dentist will prepare or modify your natural teeth on either side of the gap so that crowns can be fitted.

Impressions will be taken of your natural teeth to create the pontic (replacement tooth), bridge and crowns. The dentist will also fit a temporary bridge to last until the next appointment.

When you next visit us, the dentist will ensure the structural framework of the bridge fits correctly. They may cement it in place temporarily to asses how it sits within your mouth before completing the fitting.

Looking after your bridge

A dental bridge can last for up to fifteen years as long as it is properly maintained. It is important to keep the area beneath the bridge clean and to maintain a good oral care regime to prevent decay.
